Volunteers

The competitors participating in these events represent the very best our sport of paragliding is capable of in cross-country flying and we feel honored to be part of that. As everybody knows, we couldn’t make these competitions happen without volunteers. It simply could not be undertaken without the help of people who are willing to donate their time and energy for everything from setting up launch to driving retrieve.

Following are a list of positions that we’ll need to fill. It works best to have someone for the full time, but even if you can offer 2 days, we can mix and match the schedule to accommodate any availability. Each of these positions has a number of people needed, which is indicated in the description. We will have directors for each area who make sure everyone is dialed in ahead of time, on their particular job and time/date slot, along with any resources they’ll need.

Launch Set up: We’ll need a number of people in the morning to take care of setting up launch and getting it prepared for the comp. This will include setting up the launch area, windsocks, tents and sound system, along with breaking it all down. We estimate we’ll need 3-5 people for this job. It will start around 8:30 until finished and then resuming after the launch window closes and should be finished by 2:00pm. (The time in between can be filled in the Launch Assistant position).

Launch Assistants: These should be pilots who are familiar with laying out gliders and making sure lines are clear for the comp pilots. They will be helping the launch director get pilots to the appropriate launch and helping to lay out their glider. 6-9 people.

Lunch Attendant: We’ll be providing lunches to the competitors for both competitions, and there will be a small counter where pilots can come and put together a lunch from a spread of items. You would take care of the food and assist the pilots. This would take 1-2 hours before launch, so could be coupled with Launch Assistant. 2-3 people.

Retrieve Drivers: We will have 5 rented 14 passenger vans that will bringing pilots to launch in the morning, then gearing up with fuel and drinks and heading out onto the flats to pick up pilots. Knowledge of the area is helpful but not necessary, we’ll provide maps, a radio and a GPS (unless you have your own). We’ll need at least 5-6 people a day for this job, and it can be a long one, but you also get to know the pilots and hear all the good stories first. If you have a truck or high capacity vehicle you’d be willing to drive retrieve with, 3-4 extra vehicles is very helpful, we would of course cover gas costs (and be externally grateful).

Goal: We’re going to be setting up a landing zone with a line and windsocks at goal every day. We’ll need a small crew to be there ahead of the pilots to set up. This position will double as retrieve driver as you will also bring pilots back from Goal with one of the vans or a truck and trailer with glider packs. 2-3 people.

Let me know as soon as you can what position(s) you are interested in and what dates you think you will be able to come out for. Nothing is in stone yet, but as long as we have a good idea of who’s available for what we’ll be moving in the right direction! Please send an em ail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with any questions or your contact information, the position(s) you’re interested in and the dates you’re available. Thank you so much for taking part in these momentous events!
